After transferring the image to the block, we see the imagine in black on a white surface.  To make it easier to see what we're doing as we engrave, we begin by re-coloring the white surface to red.  The process, called darkening, makes it easy to distinguish three different areas:
  • red - where we need to cut
  • white - where we've already cut
  • black - where we should avoid cutting
